BRIEF HISTORY

St. Lawrence Roman Catholic Church was the result of missionary activity among the citizens of Houtzdale by the Rev. Martin Meagher. The first church was begun in April 1875, the building committee being P. J. McCullough, Frank Bolger, David Buckley, James Dunn, and John Garrity. The contractor was David C. Nelson. At the time of the first service, on 11 May 1876, the floor collapsed, killing Mr. Nelson, and injuring many others. Construction again commenced, and the building was completed in 1882. This structure was used until 1970 by the congregation, when, joining with the congregations of St. Barbara and Sacred Heart, the new parish of Christ the King was established in Houtzdale.

St. Lawrence Cemetery was conveyed to Fr. Meagher by the Houtz heirs, and initially consisted of two acres. It was opened about the spring of 1877. Part of the original wrought-iron fence remains. The cemetery has been gradually expanded over the years, and is still active.

The early burial register of St. Lawrence Catholic Church having been lost, this record will serve to fill a gap in the early history of this congregation. The monuments were copied as accurately as possible. The worn condition of many of the older markers, and the fact that several have fallen over onto their faces or have sunken into the ground (obscuring the inscriptions), lends itself to imperfections in this work, but it is presented as correctly as was possible.

METHOD, USE OF ABBREVIATIONS, ETC.

St. Lawrence Cemetery was copied in two sections, the division line being a grassy roadway which runs down through the center of the cemetery. Each row was copied from left to right, beginning at the bottom of the hill and working to the road at the top. Each stone is assigned a number. Grave spaces with no visible marks are indicated as such, by a number of spaces, to aid in finding markers. Each marker was copied in its entirety so much as was legible, including verses, poems, etc.

Some abbreviations were incorporated for ease of transcription. The use of "w/o" for wife of, "s/o" for son of, etc.; the abbreviating of WWII for World War II. The use of an asterisk (*) denotes a flag on the grave. The wording immediately following the asterisk indicates what is on the metal flag holder. If nothing, only an asterisk is recorded. Where a flag is obviously placed in error, the phrase [sic] is inserted after the transcription. Ages are given in years, months, and days following the letter "a" after the name. Where an age was given in years and months, it is shown thus: 64.2 If given in years and days, thus: 64.0.2 If given in some other terms, it is illustrated thus: 2m 6d

It is hoped that this record will prove of use to those researching Roman Catholic families in Houtzdale, PA, and surrounding areas. There may well be errors in this work; researchers are encouraged to double-check the stones and utilize other resources to verify accuracy.

These inscriptions were copied in the summer of 2002 by myself, Justin Kirk Houser; and my grandparents, Warren S. and Julia V. Breon, without whose hard work this record would be impossible.

This burial record is dedicated to Maureen McDermott Marella, and the members of the McDermott and Shannon families, many of whom rest here in marked and unmarked graves.
