Lancaster – On Tuesday last, a woman named Tomlinson, was brought before Alderman Leonard, on complaint of neighbors for ill treatment of her stepchild. The child’s appearance, without any other evidence, was sufficient to send the mother to the Penitentiary for the remainder of her natural life. The poor little girl, ten years of age, is reduced to a mere skeleton, and could not stand without a support. Her face was battered in a shocking manner, and her eyes swollen and bloodshot from recent blows. Evidence was produced that she dragged the child by its hair, and on different occasions tied her hands and compelled her to sit all night in a chair. This fiendish woman, being unable to procure bail, was sent to prison to await her trial at the next Court of Quarter Sessions.
