Passing of Shirley Pierce

Shirley Pierce, a founding Director of PA-Roots passed away on 6 February 2010 following a valiant fight with cancer.  Shirley was very active providing resources for Clearfield, Elk and Jefferson counties in Pennsylvania.  During the Board of Directors meeting in January Shirley was elected to the status of Director of Emeritus.  Her presence will be deeply missed by the genealogy community.

Shirley Jean Pierce, 58, Fern Hollow Lane, Brookville, died Saturday at Brookville Hospital.
Born June 4, 1951 in Brookville, she was a daughter of the late Charles Edward and Betty Allen Zipfel of Shinglehouse. She was married to William K. Pierce Sr. on April 2, 1971 in Coudersport. He survives.
She lived in the Elmer/Monroeville area of New Jersey for many years. She worked for William Schober and Sons in Monroeville, N.J. and later moved to the Smyrna/Dover area of Delaware where she worked at Rick’s Deli and as a clerk for Boscov’s Department Store.
She returned to Pennsylvania and was active in volunteering at Jefferson County Historical Society in Brookville; and she was on the Board of Directors of the PA-Roots, a Pennsylvania non-profit, web-based genealogy organization. She enjoyed quilting, family history research and spending time with her family.
She is also survived by a son, William K. Pierce Jr. of Brookville; a daughter, Tracy Lynn (Jimmy) Blanchfield of Smyrna, Del.; five brothers: Charles Zipfel of North Olmstead, Ohio, Steven Zipfel of Doylestown, Jeffery Zipfel of Aliquippa, the Rev. Nathan Zipfel of Johnstown and Phillip Zipfel of New London; one sister, Virginia Kirchhoff of Elkart, Ind.; and two grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a sister, Janet Zipfel.

PIERCE: Shirley Jean, Fern Hollow Lane, Brookville, died Feb. 6, 2010. Friends will be received Friday at the time of services at Sigel United Methodist Church. A funeral service will be held at noon Friday at the church with the Revs. Nathan Zipfel and Kevin Bochus officiating. Burial will be in Brookville Cemetery. Memorial donations may be made to the Jefferson County Historical Society, 172 Main St., Brookville, PA 15825. Arrangements are under the direction of the McKinney Funeral Home, Brookville.
