CHAPTER XXV
COMPANY F, ONE HUNDRED AND THIRD REGIMENT, P.V.
Enlistment – To the Field – Services – Roll
CAPTAIN McDOWELL, who recruited this company in the fall and early winter of 1861, from the counties of Allegheny and Clarion, found the same difficulty that the other recruiting officers of the One Hundred and Third did. However, on the 7th of December, 1861, the company was mustered into the United States service with an enrollment of 107 men, many of whom were transferred from Company A. The company’s history is almost identical with that of the regiment. At the battle of Fair Oaks Sergeant Henry H. Neely, with about fifteen men, was with Company A, the remainder of the company was on fatigue duty, slashing timber, till Casey’s troops were driven back. These then discarded their axes and took to their guns. During the fight no casualties occurred to this company.
At Plymouth, N.C., the company was commanded by Captain John Donaghy. It numbered about fifty men all told, and all were captured. Of these, about twenty-five died in prison, or after release. The information relative to this company is limited, therefore this sketch is necessarily brief.
Second Lieutenant Henry H. Neely of this company is well known throughout Clarion county, having been once elected sheriff. In 1886 he renounced his faith in the Democratic party, with which he had always acted, and united with the Prohibition party, being its candidate for member of the House of Representatives in the Legislature of Pennsylvania.
