Wells of Pennsylvania
John Wells was probably an original settler in Pennsylvania, though nothing is known of him prior to 1690, when he purchased one hundred acres of land from John Gordon, agent for William Penn. He was then said to be of Lower Dublin township, Philadelphia county. In 1693 he was assessed in Oxford township, in the first tax list of Philadelphia county known to be in existence. He died before 1736. At the time of his decease he was possessed of three hundred acres of land, which in 1736 was occupied by his son Samuel Wells. The name of his wife was Olive, and his children were: John Wells, who married Esther Bostick in 1743; Samuel Wells, who died in 1778 and had these married children : John, Samuel, Rebecca, Ruth, Phebe and Mercy.
In 1684 James Wells was a resident of Kent county, Del., where he purchased six hundred and seventy-five acres of land, in two tracts, from Evan Davis, the deed bearing date of June 20, 1684. He had two sons and one daughter, John Wells, Thomas Wells and Katherine Wells.
