Inscriptions taken by, proof read to stones and typed by Marie Malark and Nichole Wittlinger
Drumore Friends cemetery is located in Liberty Square, Drumore township on
what I think is Furnglen Road. It is a fairly small cemetery, nicely kept. It is
located across the road from the meeting house, still standing to date. Many of its
former members are laid to rest in this place. Some fund raising has been done to
help preserve the meeting house.
We are fortunate to have some records of the burials at Drumore Friends
these records have been incorporated into the following list of cemetery
inscriptions. Any information taken from these records will be listed as /First
name, Surname/. The only information included was the name, and place of burial, the
records show no dates.
There are still stones in the cemetery with just initials or unreadable
which do not show up in the records. I think they were written down at a later tome
when care of the cemetery was taken over. Early on Quakers did not believe in
tombstones and we may never know who these people were.
The inscriptions are written down reading left to right, completely across
the row. There is a strip of grass down the center of the cemetery which must be
vacant. But found it easier to read the complete row. Instead of having a left and
right section.
On dates which were had to read ??marks were placed next to the numbers, the
Quaker or Friends also listed the dates as numbered months such as Died 10th day 11th
month 1864 or 10th month 11th day 1864, so if a month is not what you show in your
records it may be a number which when worn would resemble another not the months
spelling as shown. The Following is what is said about the Drumore Friends in the
1883 printing of the book ” History of Lancaster County” by Ellis and Evans
“The Friends’ meeting-house in Drumore was erected in 1816. It is located
one-half mile south of Liberty Square. The land was donated by Jacob Shoemaker, and
is a portion of the land purchased by him of Moses Irwin, Jr.. He inherited the same
from his father, Moses Irwin, who in the year 1748 took out a patent for three
hundred and nine acres of land, and in 1750 another patent for one hundred and fifty
acres . Previous to the erection of their present meeting-house the Friends assembled
in an old school building, one mile west of the present location, on the south side
of the road. Among the oldest members are found the names of Joseph Stubbs, David
Parry, Jacob Shoemaker, Robert Clendenin, Isaac Smith, Isaac Bolton, Joseph Smith,
Simon Pennock, George Lamborn, Amos Walton, Jesse Lamborn, James Worral and wife,
and Ezekiel Atkinson.
Among the present elders are James Bolton, and Alban Cutler. The meeting
includes about one hundred members, and is known as Drumore preparative meeting. It
belongs to Little Britain Monthly Meeting, Nottingham Quarterly Meeting, and
Baltimore Yearly Meeting.”
