Kingwood, a small village in the north central part of the township, was founded by Alexander W. Walter in 1854.
It consists of about a dozen houses and up to the time of the completion of the railroad along the river, it was the business center of the township.
The first dwelling house was built by Alexander W. Walter in 1854. Two years later he erected a store building, and in time the village grew up around it. A. J. Shultz opened the first blacksmith shop about 1868. Jacob Kregar succeeded Mr. Walter in the store. The village has been a postoffice town for about fifty years.
Kingwood’s business interests in 1883 were two stores, one blacksmith-shop, one shoemaker-shop, three cabinetshops and one physician. The village contains two churches.
