Philip Joseph Allgeier

A young Brookville family was virtually wiped out in a tragic head-on automobile collision Sunday afternoon in Winchester, Virginia.

Killed were Philip Joseph Allgeier, his wife, Frances Louise (Grasso) Allgeier, and their 18-month old son, Philip M. Allgeier.  Listed in critical condition Monday afternoon in the Winchester Memorial Hospital was the surviving member of the family, four year old Theresa.  She is suffering from a fractured arm, a fractured leg, multiple cuts and abrasions of the face and head, and a possible concussion.

The accident happened on Route 522 near the Virginia, West Virginia state line and about 30 miles southeast of Hagerstown, Maryland.  The Allgeier family had been visiting relatives in the Brookville area and were en-route back to Tabb (Newport News), Virginia, where Mr. Allgeier is employed.

State police, who investigated the accident, report that Mrs. Allgeier was driving the family car, a 1963 station wagon.  She had just overtaken and passed a vehicle when her auto collided head on with the oncoming Metzner automobile.

Mr. and Mrs. Allgeier, who reside on the Richardsville road two miles north of the borough, left Sunday for Winchester and were expected to arrive in Brookville next Monday.

The Donald C. Galbraith Funeral Home hearse was sent to Virginia on Sunday to return the bodies of the three deceased persons to Brookville, where funeral services will be held later in the week.

It is understood that Mr. Allgeier was employed at Newport News by the T. A. Loving Construction Company.  He attended the Immaculate Conception school and the Brookville Area High School.
