Barbara Jean (Hetrick) Mapes

Barbara Jean (Hetrick) Mapes, Grove City resident was a retired nurse and substitute teacher.

Barbara J. Mapes, a resident since 1967 of 908 Sunset Avenue, Grove City, passed away at 12:10 a.m., Monday, August 22, 2005, in UPMC Montefiore Hospital, Pittsburgh, after a four-year illness.  She was 66.

Mrs. Mapes was born February 9, 1939, in Brookville, PA, to Frank and Lucy Hetrick.

She earned a bachelor of science degree in physical education from Slippery Rock University.

Mrs. Mapes retired as a licensed practical nurse from Grove Manor and previously worked at the former Bashline Hospital and in the office of Dr. Anderson Donan, all of Grove City.  She was a former substitute teacher in the Mercer, Slippery Rock, Lakeview and Grove City school districts.

Mrs. Mapes was a member of Grace United Methodist Church and Order of the Eastern Star Chapter 86, both of Grove City. She served on the boards of the Grove City Recreation Council and Recreation Center and was formerly active with Girl Scouts and Brownie troops.

Mrs. Mapes enjoyed reading, swimming, and crafts.

Her husband, Wilber W. "Bill" Mapes, whom she married February 23, 1960, survives at home.

Also surviving are three daughters:  Barbara E. Mapes, Coraopolis; Carmen Ann Salvino and her husband, Jim, Germantown, MD; and Susan Lynn Guerino and her husband, Ken, Bear, DE; two brothers:  Frank Hetrick, Marionville, PA, and Richard Hetrick, Brookville; and three grandchildren.

Mrs. Mapes was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Helen Smith.
