Harry Lee Matthews

Harry Lee Matthews, 74, Jenks Street , Brookville, died Saturday, October 5, 2013, at Jefferson Manor in Brookville.

Born September 1, 1939, in Brookville, he was a son of the late Carl Leroy and Clara M. McGarvey Matthews.

He was married to Shirley Tomski Matthews June 8, 1958, in Brookville. She survives.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Reserves for seven years.

He retired after 40 years of service as a welder and later a truck driver for George I. Reitz and Sons in Brookville.

He enjoyed gardening, farming, nature, taking walks in the woods and taking time at night looking up at the stars. He embraced and loved his Cherokee Indian heritage. He enjoyed NASCAR racing and Steelers football and “tailgating” on Friday nights with his friends at Brookville Area High School football games. Harry also enjoyed playing cards and dominos with friends and spending time with his family.

He is also survived by two daughters, Susan (John) Gardner of Mullica Hill, N.J., and Barbara Phillips of Clarion; a son, Larry (Vanessa) Matthews of San Diego, Calif.; two brothers, Donald Matthews of Wellsboro and Edward Matthews of Pryor, Okla.; a sister, Sr. Janet Newcome of Corpus Christi, Texas; and eight grandchildren: Sean, Julia, Michelle, Ethan, Alyssa, Ryan, Brandon and Blake.

Friends will be received from 5-7 p.m. today and 1-3 p.m. Monday at the McKinney Funeral Home in Brookville. A funeral service will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at the funeral home with Pastor Paul Joseph Hickernell officiating.
