Shirley Jean (Smith) Kwasnik

Shirley Jean (Smith) Kwasnik, 74, of Chesterfield, Michigan died March 16, 2013 at her residence with family by her side.

Shirley was born September 13, 1938 in Brookville. The daughter of the late Thomas M. Smith and Bernice G. Smith.

Shirley graduated from Brookville High School in 1957. She went to Washington DC for a secretarial job, where she worked from 1957 to 1964 at Civil Aeronautics Administration, now the FAA. She met John in Washington while he was in the Army and were married November 28, 1964, and then moved to the Detroit area.

After establishing residence in the Detroit area, she found work for an attorney. A short time later she and John started their family with sons John Thomas and Gregory James. While the boys were in school she worked as a teacher's aide and also taught religious instruction. She worked with the Fine Gold Association and county literacy program. Shortly thereafter, she went back to work finding employment at Catholic Social Services were she organized the Retirement Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP); retiring in 2002.

After retirement, she enjoyed cooking, reading, television, and word puzzles. She also enjoyed the yearly family gatherings at Cook Forest State Park.

She is survived by her husband John; sons John Thomas and Gregory James and his wife Judy; two grandchildren Sara and Hannah. She is also survived by her brothers Ronald Smith (Sandy) of Mukwanago, Wisconsin; Thomas (Jim) Smith (Fiancé' Loreen) of Gresham, Wisconsin and sisters Patricia Saylor of Sligo, Pennsylvania and Mary Jane Kitchen of Ruckersville, Virginia.

She was preceded in death by her parents Thomas and Bernice Smith.

Visiting hours will be held Thursday, March 21, 2013 from 2:30 p.m. till 9:00 p.m. Scripture Service will be at 7:30 p.m. at Gendernalik Funeral Home, 35259 23 Mile Rd, New Baltimore, MI 48047 (586)725-0177. Mass will be Friday March 22, 2013 at St. Mary's Church at 10:30 a.m., there will be a short visitation at 10:00 a.m. at St. Mary's in New Baltimore. Burial will be at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery, New Baltimore, MI.
