- BROWN, HINDMAN posted by James Hindman on Sunday, June 15, 1997
- HINDMAN/BROWN. Seeking information on John HINDMAN, born about 1796 in Pa, maybe in Armstrong County. The 1850 census for W. Franklin Twp shows John, age 54, wife Jane, age 33, and children Mary, age 11, Sarah age, 8, John McC., age 5, Joseph R. 4, and James L., 3 months. However, I believe John was married earlier. The 1820 census listed John Hindman and wife, both aged 16-26, in Sugarcreek Twp. His parents were James and Mary McClelland Hindman. Would like to know who was John's first wife. She may have been Jinny Brown Hindman, daughter of John Brown of Sugarcreek Twp. He died in 1835, naming his daughter in his will. Any information would be appreciated.

- PORTZER posted by Karen Portzer on Saturday, June 21, 1997
- According to my grandfather's marriage record, Andrew PORTZER was born in Armstrong county on June 16, 1878. We always throught he was born in Clarion. The 1880 cenus shows they lived in Catfish, Madison Township, Clarion county. His sisters obituary states she was born in West Brady. Am I safe in assuming West Brady is Brady's Run and that they would float down the river to give birth, perhaps a midwife lived there. Are there any catholic church in the vicinity where I can find a baptimal record ? Would they be likely to go to East Brady to church or Rimersburg? Does the church still exist and is there an address?
- DUNCAN, GOULD, KITANGA, LEACH, MCCLELLAN, MCCLELLAND, MCDONALD posted by Debbie McClellan Wedder on Monday, June 23, 1997
- I am researching the GOULD & MCCLELLAN(D) surnames in Armstrong County Pa. In 1848 Hannah GOULD married Samuel F. MCCLELLAND, Hannah was b.1828-30, Samuel was born 1820-22. Samuel was a collier by trade and they eventually left Pa. for Ohio following the mines and furnace work. They came to Lawerence Cty. Ohio by 1860. I believe that Samuel had a brother named John A. McClelland,as he also is in Lawrence Cty.Ohio with an elderly man who is deaf & dumb named Robert Wilson, on the 1870 census. Other people from the Armstrong region made this trip to Ohio because of the furnaces. MCDONALD & DUNCAN are a couple of the surnames who came. When the McClellands came to Ohio early on they had two young women with the surname LEACH (Drusilla) living with them, I mention these names as they may be relevant to the GOULD or MCCLELLAND history. Samuel & Hannah GOULD MCCLELLAND had 4 children who were all born prior to their departure for Ohio, they were: Mary Melise McClelland; Hannah McClelland; George Shoemaker McClelland; and my great grandfather, James Willson McClelland, who went by the name Willson McClelland. I know there was a Wilson McClelland who lived in the Armstrong, Venango, Clarion Cty. area of Pa. in the 1850's so this may be a connection as well. I mention these unusual middle names as I feel they could also be family connections. I have been looking for these people and their parents for 10 years and if anyone out there has information I'd love to hear from you. Thanks in advance. Debbie McClellan Wedder at KITANGA@aol.com .
