STONERSTOWN HISTORY

line

At the beginning...

Stonerstown was one of the earliest villages in the northern part of Bedford County, being settled around 1800. However, the earliest settler of record was James Dunlap. He moved there in 1820 with his children Jane, James, William, Mary, John, Sarah, Elizabeth, David, and Andrew. The village was doing well until the building of the Huntingdon and Broad Top Railroad in 1855. Stonerstown was not on the railroad's route, so most of the business in the area was diverted to the new town of Saxton.
