PARKESBURG POST

Parkesburg Post 1 December 1938

Mrs. Mary Ann Paxson
Mrs. Mary Ann (Kling) Paxson, widow of Joseph C. Paxson, who died in
1922, passed away at 1:30 o'clock on Sunday morning at the home of Mrs.
Ferree C. Grossman, near Sadsburyville, in her 92nd year.  Mrs. Paxson
sustained a fall in her room in August, when she fractured the main bone
in her right leg below the hip and had been confined to bed since.
Although the bone had knit she suffered the effects of general shock.
While she fell ill on Saturday night, she seemed to rally and her death
came unexpectedly.
Mrs. Paxson was born Nov. 8, 1847, near Intercourse, Lancaster County,
being the elder daughter of the late David and Mary Kling, of well known
Lancaster County lineage.  When she was about 16 years old her father
purchased the farm now owned by the Misses Meredith on the Lincoln
Highway near Black Horse, moving to Chester County and after her
marriage to Mr. Paxson in 1875, the farm was purchased by her husband
and they resided there until Mr. Paxson's death.  In recent years she
had made her home with her daughter, Mrs. Ferree Grossman.
Early in life Mrs. Paxson joined the United Brethren Church at
Intercourse, but after her marriage she attended the meetings of the
Society of Friends at Old Sadsbury, of which her husband was a
birthright member.  During the days when Moscow Sunday School flourished
upon the Lincoln Highway, she took an active interest in its Sunday
School work.
Her sister preceded her in death many years ago and she was the last
of her generation.  Surviving her are four sons: Clayton K. Paxson,
Coatesville; David T. Paxson, Paist's Mill; Harry A. Paxson and William
Paxson, Parkersburg; and one daughter, Mary R., wife of Ferree C.
Grossman, Lincoln Highway, west of Sadsburyville, with whom she resided.
Six grandsons, two granddaughters and one great-grandson, David Paxson,
2nd, son of Mr. and Mrs. Horace M. Paxson, of Parkersburg.
Funeral services were held Wednesday afternoon at 2 o'clock with
interment in the Sadsbury Friends burying ground near Christiana.

Mrs. Louie McPherson Paxson, wife of Clayton K. Paxson, one of the
prominent residents of Sadsbury township until her removal to
Coatesville a short time ago, died in the Lancaster General Hospital
early on Sunday morning.  She was in her 62nd year.  Death followed an
operation which at the time was considered only a minor one.
Mrs. Paxson was a daughter of the late David and Mary Blair McPherson
and was born in West Caln township, near Sadsburyville, and spent all of
her life in that section.  She was prominent as a member of Upper
Octorara Church with which her family had been connected for
generations.  She served as president of the Women's Missionary Society
and later a secretary of the Chester Presbyterial Society and as a
teacher in the Upper Octorara Sunday School.  She was prominent in the
Octorara Historical Society and was narrator in the 1932 Washington
pageant of that group.
She was a member and former lecturer of Sadsbury Grange No. 1085, and
only a week ago had read a paper at a county-wide grange program at
Oxford.  Previous to her marriage she taught school in a number of
county schools.  For many years she and her husband lived on a farm in
West Sadsbury township and later on the old McPherson homestead in West
Caln.  About a year and a half ago they retired and few months ago moved
to Coatesville to live with Mrs. Paxson cousin, Dr. S. H. Scott.
Besides her husband, Mrs. Paxson is survived by two sisters, Mrs.
David T. Paxson, of near Sadsburyville, and Miss Cora B. McPherson, of
Coatesville.  The funeral was held yesterday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock
at Upper Octorara Church with interment in the adjoining cemetery.
