There is an abandoned, over-grown cemetery at the former site of Peale in Cooper Twp, Clearfield Co. There is one surviving memorial stone in a once extensive grave yard. The inscription on the one
stone reads:
"Martha Renfrew, died May 16, 1886, age 74 years"
When I last visited the grave site in 1992, it seemed like the site was quite vulnerable to vandals, as it is off the road, way back in the woods. I would love to obtain any other information on persons buried at this site, but I have not been able to find much about this "ghost town". I believe the land is still owned by
Clearfield Bituminuous Coal Co, and is being used by a hunting club.
There was an article about Peale by the late George A. Scott that appeared in Clearfield Progress, Feb 26, 1992, page 4. Also, Andy Petkac, a former journalism student at Penn State wrote a more extensive article on Peale in 1975.Click HERE and then school down to see some pictures of the area including the tombstone.
Special thanks to Robert Kamp for kindly providing this information. If anyone knows anything else about this cemetery, please e-mail me
