Chestnut Level Presbyterian Church is located at the intersection of Chestnut Level and River Roads west of Pennsylvania Highway 272 in the southern part of Lancaster County, near Hensel, about 8 miles north of the PA/MD state line.

According to Egle and others the church was organized ca 1719.

A note to tell you why I am interested in this cemetery. At least two of the five Bigham families of early Mecklenburg Co.,NC are believed to have come from PA. One family was a group of stone cutters who left over 800 known tombstones scattered from PA to Charleston, SC. Some of their stones are at Chestnut Level and other Lancaster cemeteries. I'm trying to make the genealogical connection between the Bighams and other families.

Dr. Dan Patterson, UNC-Chapel Hill, is writing a book on the tombstones as one of the most outstanding examples of Irish folkart in the colonial period. Dan has already published a number of articles and made a trip to Ireland last summer.
