Lancaster County Surname Queries
Looking for information regarding Martha Gillcrest who married Robert Blackburn 12 June 1765 in Lancaster County. I believe that Robert may have been the son of James and Mary Blackburn who lived in Chester County on the east bank of the Octoraro Creek dividing Chester and Lancaster counties. This Robert Blackburn disappeared from the tax rolls of Chester County about 1764, apparently unmarried, and my ancester Robert Blackburn appeared in Tryon County, North Carolina, with wife Martha _______ in about 1766. Any information regarding Robert Blackburn and/or Martha Gillcrest will be much appreciated.

LANGDON; ELDREDGE Seeking parents and siblings of Hannah LANGDON born 22 Dec. 1774. She was from Lancaster County, Pa. Hannah LANGDON married Aaron ELDREDGE II in 1792. They had eight children. ORR Arthur ORR, Sr. from Manor Twp., Lancaster Co., PA to Huntington Twp., York Co., PA in 1761. His son, Arthur ORR, Jr. had land next to him in Tyrone Twp. The ORRs went to Washington Co., VA in 1795 where Arthur ORR, Jr. and wife Ann raised a large family. Arthur ORR, Sr. was known as "the Elder" in VA. His son, Arthur ORR, Jr. was known as "Sr." in Washington Co., VA. James ORR, Sr. (son of Arthur and Ann) married Mary CARSON (dau. of Moses CARSON and Margaret McGREW, the daughter of Archibald McGREW and Martha BRACKEN). James and Mary also went to Washington Co., VA and raised a family. Would like to correspond with anyone researching this family.

JORDAN PICKELL MILLER HISTORY OF CALDWELL WILLIAM C. JORDAN (Dealer in Pianos, Organs and Musical Instruments, Hamilton). To the citizens of Caldwell county and the country which surrounds it, there is perhaps no name more generally or favorably known than that of William C. Jordan, whose business, since his establishment here in January, 1880, has achieved such proportions as leaves no doubt in the minds of those most skeptical as to the reliability of this house. A personal acquaintance with nearly every citizen of the different townships in this county has tended to make him exceedingly popular, and especially successful in the handling of his organs and pianos. His leading brands of the former are the William C. Jordan anti Sterling organs; while the Sterling and Paris pianos meet with ready sale. Another recognized cause of his large patronage is his extensive advertising, a feature which can not fail of producing the desired results. He is the pioneer in his line in this county, and he has numerous representatives' in Daviess, Livingston, Clinton, and other counties. William C. Jordan was born April 17, 1856, in Columbia county, O., his father being William J. Jordan, of the same State, and a prominent and leading attorney in the vicinity where he made his home. He married Miss Emily Crane, also a native of Ohio, and to them a family of eight children was born, of whom William C. was the eldest. His early scholastic advantages as he grew up tended to increase the natural desire which he possessed to follow the legal profession, and after fitting himself for its practice, under the careful and watchful guidance of his father, he was admitted to the bar in April, 1879. Subsequently he practiced with his father a short time but soon went to Osage county, Kan., from whence he traveled over all sections of the State. This he continued until his removal to Hamilton, as above mentioned. August 31, 1880, Miss Hattie R. Pickell became the wife of Mr. Jordan. She was born in Lancster county, Pa., the daughter of George Pickell. Mr. and Mrs. J. have two children: Maud and William J. He is a member of the A.F. and A. M., being a Royal Arch Mason. THE PICKELLS AND JORDAN FAMILIES IN HAMILTON IN SEVENTIES AND EIGHTIES. JORDAN the. Piano and Organ man. The Old Phoenix Hotel. NARRATOR: Mrs. Hattie Jordan of (79) Hamilton, Missouri Mrs. Jordan is the widow of William Jordan, a Hamilton Merchant over fifty years ago and the daughter of George Pickell and Rebecca Miller of Lancaster County Pennsylvania. Her father was a brother of Wm. Pickell and her mother was a sister of Mary Miller his wife. Thus Mrs. Jordan is a double cousin of Wm. Pickell aged 88 of Hamilton. Her father lived one half mile from Bart in Lancaster county Pennsylvania and after his death the Mother and children moved to Lancaster City In 1872 the family came to Hamilton. Her brother George was already here on a farm near Nettleton. Three brothers out of five lived here- (George, who later quit farming and became town marshal; Wm. a produce dealer; Ben, who was in a music store with her husband. Her mother rented the last house on Bird Street north side now owners by George Bretz and later bought the little house east of Seth Young's house. Mrs. Jordan lived there till her marriage. After she became the wife of Mr. Jordan, they lived in with Aunty Smith (who used to be a well known Bible teacher here) in the house still known as the Aunty Smith house. There her daughter Mrs. Maud Turner was born. Mrs. Hattie Jordan . Mrs. Jordan was a Davy Ferguson pupil, in the old north brick school. Some of her class mates were: Addie (Martin) George, Wilda Rohrbough, Genoa and Mattie Claypool (Aunts of Mrs. Mollie Vines). Her husband Wm. Jordan was a lawyer by study,passing the Ohio Examinations 1878. But because of his health he came to Hamilton 1880 and began to sell pianos and organs. He and she used to ride around the country and leave an organ in home on trial for a week or so in hopes of a sale. He had own brand of organs, The Jordan Organ . Mr. Jordan owned the old Phoenix hotel on Main street and had his show rooms there for awhile. This building was the only three - story building ever erected in Hamilton. It was once the Kelso building. In the late seventies Mr. Jordan rented the whole building to the Harvey family who kept a Dry Goods Store on the ground floor, had their living rooms on the second floor and their sleeping rooms on the third floor. Later the Harveys built a brick directly across the street and lived above the store. This was about where the Lindley building is. The Jordans owned quite a frontage on north Main in the eighties, from the present McMasters through the site of the Missouri Store. After her husbands death, Mrs. Jordan sold the old buildings to Finis Martin who tore it down and built two houses in town out of the lumber. INTERVIEWED APRIL 1934.

The first four above are in the 1850 Federal Census for Lancaster Co., PA. I am looking for the ancestors and the decendants of these people. I have down line for Christian F. junior. Wish to contact and share information with cousins. Family is believed to have gone to Illinois after 1852, and this Christian F. junior is found in Madison Co. 1870 census as Frederick C. Ulmer (the son of Frederick C. senior, like above). So I have the potential confusion of these two father/son -- junior/senior. Looking, therefore, for the decendants of Jacob Ulmer 1846 to confirm or deny this info. Family traditions supports the above information. Trying very hard to prove this family and their whereabouts. Open to suggestions also.

John Postlethwaite of Lancaster County Information is requested for the family of John Postlethwaite and Susanna IRVIN (P). John and Susanna had a son Thomas Irvin Postlethwaite who married a MARY ELIZABETH DRAKE. They had a daughter Elizabeth Postethwaite who married David TAYLOR my GGGF. Specifically, request information on David TAYLOR. All that has been reported is that he was killed in 1841 in a furniture mill accident in Mapleton Depot. After the accident the family moved back into the John Postlethaite residence in Wayne Township, Mifflin County. That is confirmed by 1850 census. The basic question is who is DAVID TAYLOR ie. I have a 1906 copy of the "House of Cessna" and also the 1930 second edition of the same. They list Cessna's starting in 1751. They are both getting very fragile and I am thinking of copying them for others. I don't want to this if someone has already done so. On the 1880 Monroe County, WV census it states that Michael YOUNG was born in VA but his parents are listed as being born in PA/ Am searching for EARLY and YOUNG ancestry information. Does any of this ring a bell?

David Caldwell, Doctor of Divinity, born 1725, died 1824. Wife Rachel Craighead? Daughter Annied Caldwell born ca 1762 in VA and married William Hunter.
