- Anyone know what INMA means as used on federal census? I'm searching for information on hospitals and asylums in Lancaster County between 1904-1910. Ggrandfather Freeman KAUFFMAN, b. 1864, Columbia, Lancaster, is said to have died in 1904, leaving his wife Susan GENSEMER and nine children. However, recent research shows a Freeman KAUFFMAN listed in the 1910 census for Lancaster as an INMA. There are about 400 others also listed as INMA. An NC Gnibe is listed as the head of house, in addition there are about 23 nurses, a physician, a guard and a fireman, plus a man listed as WTMN (don't know what that means either). I'm assuming INMA means inmate, but I'm not certain. Need to know where I'd find out.
