Samuel F Stewart enlisted at Mercer, PA.  When the 139th was formed on the 1st of September, 1862, at Camp Howe, near the city of Pittsburg, his company was assigned to the 139th, as Company A.

Private Stewart was wounded at the Wilderness, VA, on May 5, 1864.  On January 1, 1864, he was transferred to the Veteran Reserve Corps. He was discharged on June 28, 1865.

Born October 21, 1839, in Mercer, Samuel Stewart married Nancy Beggs. They had two children:
  • Susan Claretta Stewart, born 1870
  • John Beggs Stewart, born 1872
Samuel died April 14, 1887 in Mercer, PA.

Samuel's grandfather, Robert Stewart, served in the War of 1812, and his great-grandfather, Lt. William Stewart, served in the Revolutionary War.
