Married Mary Dick, who was born in 1776 and died in 1852. Both are buried in Bethel Cemetery near Armagh, Indiana Co, Pa.Note on James Wherry:
In 1812 James Wherry was coming to the United States from Ireland on the HMS Guerriere when the ship was engaged the USS Constitution in battle on August 18, 1812. The family history has this account of the incident: "It seems a far cry to the days of 1812 and the naval fight between the Constitution, 'Old Ironsides' and the British war vessel, the Guerriere, so creditable to the sea fighters of the then young republic. R. R. Ellis is a well-known resident of this place, recalls a circumstance connected with this historic engagement of great local personal interest.
Mr James Wherry, the father of the late Mrs. Margaret Graham, a well known resident of the town the greater part of the last half century, with his family, among them two sons, John and James, brothers of Mrs. Graham, one of them the father of James T. Wherry, also formerly a citizen of the town, were passengers of the Guerriere, emigrants from Ireland when it engaged in its bloody conflict with the Constitution on the high seas. During the conflict, while the American vessel hurled a storm of iron upon its opponent, and the decks of the Guerriere ran with blood, Mr. Wherry and his family crouched in the hold, anticipating instant death. When the Guerriere surrendered, Mr. Wherry and his family were transferred uninjured from the sinking vessel to its captor, the Constitution, and eventually reached the land of their adoption, settling in Armstrong County."
This battle also gave the nickname of "Old Ironside" to the USS Constitution when someone reportedly said its sides were made of iron when they saw a cannon ball bounce off the side of the ship.
