BORLAND, THORN, WATSON posted by John Borland on Sunday, January 2, 2000

I have been tracing the Borland family for a few years. My grandfather was Archibald Borland b. 1847 in Salem,PA. His grandafather was John Boreland who was one of the original pioneers of Westmoreland county and is mentioned in the history of Westmoreland CTY. He came from N Ireland in the 1770's and we have an Obit of his father who remained in Ireland. He came with six or seven brothers and a sister, so there were many families in that area. I don't know where to place the "Margaret" Borland that you list. Please correspond if possible..

HECK, KUNKLE posted by Lee Williams on Tuesday, January 4, 2000

I'm researching the Heck family in Westmoreland in the early and mid 1800's. Jacob Heck (b 1801, d 1843) married Elizabeth Kunkle (b 1803, d 1879). They had six children: Philip Daniel, b 1827; Elisa Jane, b 1829; Mary, b 1832; Rebecca, b 1835; William, b 1838; and Samuel, b 1840.

William and Samuel served in the PA Infantry during the Civil War. After their service, William, Samuel, their mother Elizabeth and sister Rebecca (married to Isaiah Kroesan) moved to Johnson county, Missouri.

I can find no trace of Philip Daniel after the 1850 census. He does not appear with his family in the 1860 census or in any of the surrounding counties. There is also no evidence he served during the war. Are there any death records available for the 1850's where I might search? I also cannot find any trace of sisters Elisa Jane or Mary. It's possible these sisters married after the 1850 census. Are there any marriage records from the 1850's that I might search?

If anyone is familiar with this family, I'd be happy to compare notes or share information. Thanks!.

ARMSTRONG, CARY posted by Douglas Armstrong on Thursday, January 13, 2000

I have been tracking an ancestor of mine, my 3rd Great Grandfather named Quinten (sometimes Quinton or Quintin) Armstrong. His "union" with Mary Catherine Cary of Indiana County, PA produced my 2nd Great Grandfather, George Armstrong, born in 1844. I have no evidence that Quinten and Mary ever married, supported by the fact that Mary was using her mainden name (Cary) on the census of 1850 in Indiana County, PA, while young George was listed as Armstrong.

It is my belief that this Quinten Armstrong came over from Westmoreland and/or Armstrong Counties, Pennsylvania, and previous to that, originated from York County, PA. Not having much success with the census records to support this, I went on a land record search to support my belief that Quinten was in Indiana County, PA at some point.

What I found thus far (I need to check earlier years) are four deeds of a Quinton Armstrong in the correct vicinity in Indiana County, PA circa 1869 to 1872. (When I get a chance to check back to as early as the 1840, I think I will find more.) Encompassing the four found deeds thus far are lands for a "Quinten Armstrong Boarding House" in the village of Richmond (Rochester Mills P.O.), a Johnston (sometimes Johnson) & Armstrong Grist Mill, as well as other land including a deed to convey to the Presbyrtian church of Rockbridge (Richmond, Rochester P.O.) one acre of land.

The deeds are as follows:

Deed Book A35 Page 193 dated March 29, 1869 from James and Catherine Riddle and purchased by Yeoman and Quinton Armstrong in Grant Township, Indiana County, PA - 100 acres

Deed Book B37 Page 70 dated April 8, 1871 from Taylor & Mary Potts and purchased by Quinton Armstrong in Washington Township, Indiana County, PA - 14 acres and 40 perches

Deed Book B 37 Page 237 dated April 29, 1871 from John C. & Eliza Rochester and purchased by Quinton Armstrong & William Johnston in Canoe Township, Indiana County, PA - 320 acres - on this land was either a Grist Mill or they built a Grist Mill.

Deed Book B 38 Page 231 dated April 16, 1872 conveyed by Quniton Armstrong & wife Sarah C. Armstrong and William P. Johnston and wife Lydia R. Johnston to the village of Richmond, County of Indiana, PA and the Presbyterian Congregation of the village of Richmond and known as Rockbridge. - 1 acre & ten perches

Despite the fact that my George Armstrong was born in 1845 and the above occurred about 25 years later, it has given me some ideas about the connection between my George Armstrong and Quinten/Quinton Armstrong.

Basically, Mary Catherine Cary, mother of George Armstrong ..... her brothers, Joseph Carey, John Cary built and worked on Grist Mills. It is believed that Mary Catherine Cary met Quinten Armstrong via her brothers. Since he does not show up in the Indiana County, PA census records, it is believed he came from Armstrong and or Westmoreland Counties, and previous to that, York County, PA.

Biographical and Cyclopedia of Blair County Author Wiley 1892

Dr. James Richard Taylor, a veteran of two wars, and a dentist who has been in successful practice for nearly a quarter of a century, now located in the city if Altoona, is a son of David and Elizabeth (Posetlethwait) Taylor, and was born September 15, 1830 near Newton Hamilton, Mifflin county, Pennsylvania. The Taylors have long been residents of the Keystone State, and their ancestry is traced back to John Taylor, one of the signers of the Declaration of Independence. David Taylor (father) was a native of Westmoreland county, this State, but removed to Mifflin county when a young man, and lived there until his death, in 1842, at the early age of forty-one years. He was millwright by occupation, and widely known in connection with his work in that line. His death was due to an accident, by which he was caught in the waterwheel of a saw mill upon which he was working, in Mifflin County. Politically he as a Whig, though never taking an active part in politics. He was a man of powerful constitution and unusual strength, and is said to have been able to handle any man in the county, though always quiet and reserved. He married Elizabeth Postlethwaite, by whom he had a family of six children, of whom four are yet living. She was a native of Mifflin county, a member of the Presbyterian church, and lived a useful and consistent Christian life; dying in 1857, after an existence extending three years beyond half a century.

James R. Taylor grew to manhood in Mifflin county, attending the common schools of his vicinity, in which he acquired a good practical education in all the ordinary English branches. When less than seventeen years of age he enlisted in Co. M, 2nd Pennsylvania volunteers, and went with that regiment to Mexico, where he was active service for fifteen months, and engaged in several of the principal battles of that war. He was with the force that captured the city of Mexico, and marched into that city with the victories American army on his seventeenth birthday, September 15, 1847. After the war was over Mr. Taylor returned to Pennsylvania, and began the study of dentistry at Williamsburg, with Dr. A. McKamey, who had commanded the company with which Mr. Taylor served in Mexico. When he had acquired sufficient skill in the dental line he located in Mifflin county, and practiced for a time in 1875 removed to Franklin county, locating at Mercersburg, where he opened a dental office and practiced until 1882 when he came to the city of Altoona. Here he has been successful engaged in the practice of his profession to the present time. in September , 1864, Dr. Taylor enlisted and served as sergeant major in the 205th Pennsylvania infantry, attached to the second brigade, third division, ninth army corps, under the command or Gen. Hartranft. In this capacity he served until the close of the civil war, being seriously wounded by the explosion of a shell, while on duty in front of Petersburg, Virginia. He was honorably discharged from service at Alexandria, that State, in June 1865, and immediately returned to Pennsylvania, where he took uo the thread of civil life where he had laid it down to enter his countrys service, and was soon enjoying a good dental practice.

On December 18, 1860, Doctor Taylor was united in marriage with Ruth L. Henderson, a daughter of James Henderson, of Cassville, Huntingdon county. To them was born four sons and two daughters: M. Louise, Thomas V., E. Dawson, Maggie C..., J. Virgil, and David H. Mrs. Taylor died May 15, 1886 aged forty-seven years, and greatly esteemed by her wide circle of friends.

Dr. Taylor is a staunch republican, but in no sense a politician, taking little part in the turmoil of practical politics. He is a member of the Presbyterian church, and of Lieutenant Potts Post, No 62, Grand Army of the Republic.

ALLEMANG, ALTMAN, BARNHART, HARROLD, HEROLD, KREIDER, REEP, REISS, SPANGLER, SPENGLER posted by Mark McCollough on Tuesday, January 18, 2000

I am trying to determine the ancestry of Johannes John SPANGLER (SPENGLER,SPINGLER)(b. 1743; d. 1820). John was married to Salome (nee unknown) Spangler. He may have came from Northampton or York County, PA and moved to the HARROLD (Herold) German Community in Greensburg,Westmoreland County, PA about 1770. The SPANGLER, REEP, KREIDER and BARNHART families seem to have travelled together. About 1797 John and Salome and his sons moved to Butler Co., PA with their daughter, Anna Elizabeth and her new husband John MCCOLLOUGH.
The Harrold Zion Lutheran Church records (Greensburg, PA) indicate John and Salome had at least 3 children:
Johannes Spangler (b. Aug 29, 1773, baptized Sept 5, 1773; sponsors Johannes HEROLD and Barbara ALTMAN)
Johannes George Spangler (b. Aug 17, 1775; baptized Sept 10, 1775; sponsors Bernhard REISS and Magdalena ALLEMANG)
Anna Elizabeth Spangler (b. Jan 28, 1779; baptized June 10, 1780; d. Jan 14, 1858); married John MCCOLLOUGH July 4, 1797 and moved to Donegal Twp., Butler Co., PA where they had 10 children.
John may have been related to Jacob Spangler, a Revolutionary War veteran who he owned land with in Sugar Creek Township, Armstrong County. In Mar 29, 1795 John and Salome were sponsors for Jacob and Elizabetha Spanglers son, Johannes Daniel Spangler at Harrolds Zion Lutheran Church, Greensurg, PA.
Any information on connections with SPANGLER families in eastern PA, or ideas of where to research, would be greatly appreciated.

MORTIMER, NESBIT posted by Susan Mortimer on Tuesday, January 18, 2000

My great grandfather, John Mortimer married CAOLINE ORNE AMELIA VIRGINIA NESBIT in 1875. Their first child, WILLIAM NESBIT MORITMER, was born 1876. JOHN MORTIMER was a brick mason. I am trying to document their time in Pennsylvania and I am having trouble finding any documents to prove they were in Pennsylvania in the 1870's. Possibly Westmoreland county. Sometime after 1876 they moved to Montana where JOHN MORTIMER owned a brick factory. Since there were brick factories in Westomoreland county, I thought I'd start looking here.

I am trying to find the family of Kochman in Westmoreland County, Pa due to two reasons. The Pa. archives search results the name I summited, Andrew John Kochman, in headline field 1890-1920 under marriage records in Greensburg, Pa. Also, my uncle Andrew John Kochman, born November 7,1889, stated that he was born in Glizteu, Pennsylvania. No one can tell me what language or what Glizteu means. I do not know how old uncle Andrew was when he left Pennsylvania and came to Ohio. Can any one help? Thank you..

DALHAUS, DOLHAUS, HOEBING posted by James Wilson on Saturday, January 22, 2000

Herman Hoebing and his wife, Christine Dalhaus (Hoebing) immigrated to the US in the 1850s or 60s from (I believe) Prussia. They settled in Greensburg Penna. and raised a family of several girls and one boy. Their son was Bernard Hoebing who was born in 1868. If anyone else is researching this family, I would appreciate communicating with them and sharing what information I have. I am particularly interested in learning the names of Herman's and Christine's parents and siblings and perhaps, from what part of Prussia they originated..

NEAL, NEEL, NEILL posted by Paul Colmer on Sunday, January 30, 2000

Trying to locate any information regarding two Neel families listed in the 1850 and 1860 Fairfield and StClair T/ship, Westmoreland Co, Pa. census. Apparently my G/G/G/M Mary (not sure of last name) had two boys to a prior union, before she married John Martin of New Florence, Pa. On a family birth record the boys were were listed as Thomas Neal, b. 3-24-1820 and John Neal, b. 3-24-1822. On the same record it listed their father as a John Neill, (different spelling), and it looked like Mary and John Neill were married in Nashville, Tenn, when Mary was 15 yr. old. When checking the 1850 Fairfield T/ship census for G/G/G/M and her current husband, G/G/G/F John Martin, I came across these two Neel families, with the same first names and ages that match Mary's two boys. Since they live close, I feel that these might be her boys? Can anyone help??? Thank you and I am willing to share any information I have!
