At the opening of the 1934 football season thirty-three boys responded to Coach Swartz' call for candidates. Among these were six pioneer players--this being only the fourth season for football in the history of the school. Graduation had left a few vacancies for which there were many aspirants. The schedule was hard and the opponents tough, nevertheless, the end of the season proved that progress had been made in football.
The first game of the season was at Alverton with the strong East Huntingdon team as our opponents. We were defeated by a score of 13 to O. Next was a home game with Elizabeth. Although we were defeated we scored a touchdown--didn't we, Joe? The score was 13 to 6.
In a sea of mud and water we held Youngwood to a score of O to O. Next we defeated the Alumni 13 to 12. George Valla scored all the points in this game.
Mount Pleasant was next on the schedule and we were defeated to the tune of 19
to O. West Newton scored an overwhelming victory when they defeated us 25 to
O. Sewickley tripped us to a 19 to 2 score--Blasko getting the safety.
The last game of the season, in part at least, compensated for our former de-
feats. With a fine display of strength and passing ability our team composed
chiefly of senior warriors, upset the undefeated Bell Township . The score was 12 to 7. Harsanyi and Blasko scored the points in this, their last game.
At the close of the season a party was held for all football players, managers and cheerleaders. The Annual Football Banquet was served by the ladies of the Mendon Grange. Letters were presented by Mr. Swartz to the following: ends Tomajko, Blasko, Shott, and Stangry guards, H. Bush, Grubich; tackles, Clutter, Somerfield, C. Valla; center, Bashioum; backs, Vekkeli, Harsanyi, G. Valla, Bush, Neal, Malago. Managers: Hoffman, Podbesek, Horne, Stahl. Assistant manager, Hazlinsky. Cheerleaders: Hughes, Gath, and Downey. Others who played football but received no letters were Lawson, Bibby, Armish, Lauric Newlin, Muscenti, Sherbondy, Hall, Eisamon, Pohley, and Blum.
The Senior boys who are graduating will be sadly missed in next years lineup.
Coach Swartz also has left us to take up new work at Fayette City. In spite of these things, we are looking forward to a good football season in the fall of 1935.
Paul Keys, a graduate of W. and J., is to be our new coach and to him and his team we wish success.Contributed for use by the Westmoreland County Genealogy Project (http://www.pa-roots.com/westmoreland/)
