Girl, 4, Dies, Brother, 12, Hurt [Title] Third Street at Morris Park. Canavan also was driving east and his car struck Mrs. Washburn's auto in the rear, driving it across the cutoff into the west bound lanes of Memorial Parkway, Mrs. Washburn's car was struck broadside by Wise's west bound rig and upended on the traffic island. Cindy was thrown from the auto onto the pavement, while her mother and brother were trapped in their car. Two motorist, William Piccione of New Village and John DeMatteo of Hackettstown, stopped at the scene to lend assistance. "I saw a cloud of smoke," Piccione recalled, "and then saw a tire from one of the cars rolling past my automobile. "We stopped and I heard this woman hollering My babies, let us out, oh my babies." Piccione and DeMatteo ran to the auto, which was lying on its roof, and together pushed the auto onto its side. They hauled Mrs. Washburn and her son from the auto and then flagged down a passing ambulance from the Washington Fire Department. I was concerned with the little girl, then, Piccione explained, "she was lying in the roadway and seemed pretty badly hurt. We got the squad to help us cover her with blankets and by then the Phillipsburg squad reached the scene and took her to the hospital." "The Phillipsburg squad got there about three minutes later, but it seemed like three hours," he said. The volunteers were also concerned about the threat of fire. "Gasoline was leaking from the car," Piccione said, "and the other car involved in the accident began to smoulder. It was a real danger." The Delaware Park Fire Co., washed the gasoline from the roadway while the company's ambulance took the young Washburn boy to the hospital. Trooper James Roseberry of the State Police at Washington continued the investigation, assisted by Trooper Robert Malanga and Joseph Colligan.
