ODD NAMES

 The origins are very interesting and some extremely difficult to discover. Some are still here today, others are not they are fading back into the past. Lets keep them alive.

Africa Hill, near garland-has one of the steepest roads in pa; it got its name however, from the wild jungle of woods that surrounds it.

Piccadilly Hill-south of corry-english name given by english settlers

Babylon Hill-near tidioute-a gift from ben hogan, a place of liquer and lurid Nights.

Old Settler-near russell-stands the largest pine tree in all this section of North america

Hearts Contents-so named for its beauty

Blue Eye-this came from an indian who settle in the region, he had one blue Eye.

Bloody Run-Sheffield-took this name from large kills of deer, which colored the waters and impressed the hunters.

Snubbers Glory-half way between Irvine and Tidioute-got its name from rafting, they would "snub it down gently" so not to break a cable.

New London-Grand Valley-once a thriving place-a hotel, stores

Bull Hill - Bull Hill in Wrightsville comes from the Bull family who lived there

There are others, that I am not sure where the name came from a word, a man, a family, an occupation, an indian, do you know???

Yankee bush, dew drop, bull hill, cole hill (1 in pittsfield and 1 in scandia) Emerson Hill, Campbell Hill, Economite Hill, Frog Hollow, Eisenbrowns Corner, Bimbers Corner, Rock City, Quaker Hill

The Russell Soundex

System is an algorithm (sp?) that assigns numerical values to certain sounds in a word, no matter what letter produces that sound. "Soundexing" a name results in a Soundex code consisting of a Letter and 3 numbers. This is the actual first letter of the last name followed by the first three "sound numbers" following that letter (i.e., R###). So Smyth and Smith, Muller and Miller, Collins and Cullens all come out with the same code. This is a useful system for indexing/arranging individual records since even two brothers might spell their name differently, or because the census taker spelled everything phonetically rather than asking for a correct spelling, etc.

Land Measurements:

1 pole or rod = 5 and a half yards;

640 acres = 1 square mile;

160 square rods = 1 acre

Land Grants. -At the close of the Revolutionary War a debt sprung upon the new government which was to be paid by the several States according to the population of each. Pennsylvania paid most of its share by the sale of public land belonging to the State. A company in Holland purchased land in Pennsylvania. Which became known as "The Holland Land Company.  It was bought for twelve and one-half cents an acre.
